I’ve never had therapy. What do I do?
First, you will contact me. We will chat a bit on the phone so that we can get a bit of a feel for each other and determine if it’s a good idea to together. We will make an appointment and at the end of that first session, we will revisit the question of whether we make a good therapist-client fit.
How many sessions do I need?
This question is the most common and has the least satisfying answer: I don’t know. It depends on so many factors. What I will say, though, is that I have the goal for all my clients to “fire” me. That is, I want you to no longer need me on a weekly basis, or even a biweekly basis. What I want is for you to be so self-empowered that you trust yourself and your ability to care for yourself. However, most long-term clients continue to check in with me on a periodic basis.
What happens in session?
We talk. We laugh (a lot). Either / both you and I cry or tear up. I listen pretty well. I like to tell stories because I think they are a pretty effective way to get some ideas across. In more concrete terms, though, you will come in, pay, catch me up for a few minutes, we’ll dig into whatever you’d like to dig into that helps move you toward your goal, we do a summary, I give you homework, and then you’re gone.
Is everything confidential?
Confidentiality is guaranteed with these exceptions: 1) if you are actively suicidal or homicidal, I need to contact the police; 2) if I hear of child or elder abuse or abuse of a vulnerable adult, I need to report this to the proper authorities; and 3) if you are 12 years old, your parents have the right to know what is occurring in our sessions (13 and older have the same confidentiality rights are adults).
